Location: Mihintale, Sri-Lanka



A mountain peak near Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka. This was the historic place where the Buddhist priest Arahat Mahinda and King Devanampiyatissa met for the first time, on a full moon poya day in June, which inaugurated the presence of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. It is now a pilgrimage site, and the site of several religious monuments and abandoned structures.
Heinz E Müller-Dietz (Historia Hospitalium 1975) describes Mihintale Hospital as being the oldest in the world.
